Award in Physical/Mathematical Science

Winner (a certificate and cash prize of HK$10,000)
Dr. TAO Yufei, from Department of Computer Science, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
Title of research: Indexing and query processing of spatio-temporal data
Supervisor: Dr. Dimitris Papadias
Comment from the Selection Panel: Dr. Tao has nine publications coming out of his PhD thesis, with one accepted by one of the most important journals in the Database area. Others were published in prestigious conference proceedings in Computer Science. Several papers have also been submitted to top journals. Dr. Tao is very bright and has excellent potential.
To reward young scientists and engineers in Hong Kong who show great promise in their field of study, with the hope that this will nurture the growth of science and technology in the region.

 

Award in Life Science

Winner (a certificate and cash prize of HK$10,000)
Dr. WUN Hau Ling, Karen, from Clinical Immunology Unit, Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Title of research: Molecular mimicry: anti-DNA antibodies may arise inadvertently as a response to antibodies generated to microorganisms
Supervisor: Prof. P.L. Lim
Comment from the Selection Panel: Dr. Wun's research is original and innovative. The experimental approach is well reasoned and meticulously carried out. Further studies on this subject may lead to a better understanding of the autoimmune disorder of systemic lupus erythematosus. Dr. Wun is encouraged to further pursue this interesting research.

Dr. CHIU Wai Kwun, Rossa, from Chemical Pathology Department, Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Title of research: Non-invasive prenatal diagnostics.

Dr. LAU Kin Tak, from Department of Mechanical Engineering, Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
Title of research: The mechanical performance of composite-strengthened concrete structures with embedded FBG sensors
Supervisor: Dr. Zhou Li-min
Comment from the Selection Panel: Dr. Lau is selected for his contribution to the development of smart structures and the determination of mechanical and thermal properties of carbon nanotube/epoxy composites.
